Photoshop Image Scattering Script
This Photoshop script lets you scatter images randomly on a canvas. There are several controls for the randomness
and the images are placed so that the result is fully seamless.
Scattering large numbers of images uses a lot of memory and may crash your Photoshop.
Save your work before executing the script. This free script is developed by Textures.com,
you may NOT resell, charge for, sub-license, rent, distribute, disassemble, alter, modify,
repackage or upload this script.
To use the script, first create a document which contains the source images. Place the source images in a grid pattern, for example in a 7x3 layout:
The script will pick an image from each field in the grid, so it is important that the images are aligned correctly.
The script contains a helpful tool to create guides to verify your layout.
Start the script by using File->Scripts->Browse and select the script. Enter the number of columns
and rows you are using, and click on Create Guides, and then Cancel the script to go back to your document.
Your source document now shows the grid that will be used for picking the images.
If your images are all placed inside their own grid box, flatten everything into a single layer, save all your documents and start the script again.
Copies - How many images the script will place. Start with a reasonable number like 100 or 250.
Mask - Select a different document to use as a Mask (Use a flat black and white image as a mask).
Scale - Random size difference for each image (to preserve sharpness it will only downscale the image).
Rotation - Random rotation, set this to 180 degrees for a fully random orientation.
Brightness and color settings - randomizes brightness and color for each image.
Shadow Layer settings - lets you change the settings of the Drop Shadow Layer that is applied to each image.
When you press Create Texture the script will create a new document and start placing images. Every 50 images it will group them into a new layer.
Based on the size of your source image and the number of copies it can take up to 10 minutes for the script to finish.
Using a Mask
The script has been updated with a mask feature to control where the pattern is placed. That way you can scatter images in a specific shape like a circle or a heart:
To use the mask, create a new document and fill it with black and white values. Make sure all layers are flattened and save as a new file. Then when running the scatter script, click the 'Mask' button and select the file. The script will then only place the pattern in places where the mask is white.
We have several flower textures that are already in a grid format, ready to use with this script.
We hope the script is useful, if you create something nice using this script don't hesitate to show it to us.
